Wednesday, October 4, 2017

Mandy Manning, a 1998 EWU graduate, has been named Washington’s Teacher of the Year.

Teaching English and math to refugee and immigrant students in the Newcomer Center at Ferris High School in Spokane, Mandy has the honor of often being her students' first teacher in the United States, helping them acclimate to their new home.

Soon after graduating from EWU, she served as a Peace Corps teacher in Armenia. In 2017, she was named the Washington state recipient of the NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence. As a Global Fellow, also, she traveled to China in June to explore and learn about their education system.

“She is a gift to our community,” writes Ferris High School’s Assistant Principal, John O’Dell. “No one better exemplifies commitment to professional practice.”
