WSU Health Sciences Spokane’s Translational Medicine Symposium will connect scientists, entrepreneurs, physicians, patients, and families to work toward novel solutions for clinical problems.

The focus for this inaugural edition of the event will be on:

  • Neurodegenerative diseases, such as ALS and Alzheimer’s disease
  • Oncology, with a focus on recurrent glioblastoma brain tumors

Through keynote and guest lectures, the program will showcase research and expertise in these areas within WSU and in the community. A novel cornerstone of the day will be the reverse-pitch session that will allow patients, families, and clinicians to share specific issues and challenges faced by those affected. An expert panel will help identify and discuss solutions to bridge the gap from idea to marketplace.

Here’s what you can expect at the Translational Medicine Symposium:

  • Coffee and networking
  • Welcome and introductions
  • Research presentation featuring Northwest Neurological, a Spokane-based private practice neurology group.
  • Guest lecture and moderated Q&A featuring Chris Rivera, president and CEO, and Ken Ferguson, chief scientific officer, Nativis. Nativis develops non-invasive, non-toxic disease treatments, with an initial focus on glioblastoma.
  • Lunch and networking
  • Keynote address and moderated Q&A featuring Rhonda Rhyne, author of “Keys to the Corner Office: Success Strategies for Women by Women” and president and CEO of medical technology company Prevencio.
  • Reverse-pitch session with expert panel. Patients, families, and clinicians will share particular pain-points and day-to-day challenges, with the goal of making specific asks for tools, devices, technologies, clothing/bedding modifications, and so on.
  • Guest lecture and moderated Q&A featuring Joseph W. Harding, PhD, cofounder and chief scientific officer, M3 Biotechnology. M3 Biotechnology develops therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases based on disease-modifying regenerative small molecules.
  • Poster session and networking reception
