Paul Lauzier Foundation gifts clinical equipment to WSU’s College of Medicine

SPOKANE, Wash. – First-year medical students at WSU’s new Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine will get to learn and test their patient examination skills in a hands-on environment thanks to the Paul Lauzier Foundation’s gift of equipment for eight clinical exam rooms on the WSU Spokane campus.
The equipment, which will be used in the Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) method of assessment, simulates the environment of a typical doctor’s office to test skills that comprise a medical appointment with a patient. With a medical doctor or faculty member observing, and a paid actor playing the role of patient, students are evaluated on elements of how they perform a clinical exam in an environment that is both objective and structured.

The Foundation’s gift includes equipment for eight exam rooms including exam tables, diagnostic instruments such as blood pressure cuffs and hand-held ultrasound machines, video cameras, two-way observation mirrors, and Google glasses, which the patient actor will wear to record the interaction with the student for review and assessment of clinical training.

The Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine will begin classes on Aug. 21.
