Gonzaga Debate Institute Draws Top High School Students Nationwide

Tuesday, June 27, 2017

SPOKANE, Wash. – More than 175 high school students nationwide are coming to Gonzaga University this summer for the Gonzaga Debate Institute. The Institute – directed by Glen Frappier, director of debate and senior lecturer at Gonzaga – offers high school students of all ages and experience levels lectures, workshops, practice debates, and research opportunities to prepare them for upcoming competition.

Much of the students’ preparation will be directed at the 2017-2018 National Speech and Debate Association topic, which focuses on the funding and regulation of elementary and secondary education in the United States.

The Institute has grown annually in both size and reputation to become one of the nation’s finest debate camps. It offers two-, four-, and five-week programs.

The first students arrived Sunday, June 25 for the Zag Scholars and Sophomores programs, which are five weeks each. Other offerings include a four-week Varsity program (July 2-29), a two-week camp for sophomores, juniors and seniors (July 16-29), a two-week program for novices (July 16-29), and a public forum (July 8-15).

Last year, the GDI partnered with the University of California at Berkeley to offer a six-week program from June 21-Aug. 2. Participating students spent three weeks at the Berkeley campus followed by three weeks at Gonzaga. This year, students in all the programs will receive intensive personalized instruction in small class sizes with a 10-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio.
