Jundt Art Museum Announces Summer Exhibitions ‘Louise Kodis’ & ‘Burnished Ground’

SPOKANE, Wash. – “Louise Kodis: Hanging by a Thread for Forty Years,” an exhibition that is part of the “Close In” series highlighting local and regional artists, opens June 2 at Gonzaga University’s Jundt Art Museum and runs through Aug. 19.

The exhibition, in the Jundt Galleries, is a 40-year survey of Kodis’ professional career as a fiber artist, and includes packaged proposals for commissioned works in public locations, award-winning public art, drawings and maquettes, and independent works created between 1968 and 2017. Fourteen new banners will also be hung in the Jundt Galleries.

Kodis and Shalon Parker, Gonzaga art department chair, will discuss “Where Did I Come from and Who Am I” at 6:30 p.m., Friday, June 2 in the Jundt Auditorium followed by a free public reception for the artist until 8:30 p.m. The galleries and museum will open at 10 a.m. on June 2.

After growing up in Harrington, Washington, Kodis moved to Spokane and became one of the area’s most beloved artists. In 2015, she won the YMCA Women of Achievement in Arts and Culture award. She helped start the Alternative Parent Participation Learning Experience (A.P.P.L.E.) through Spokane Public Schools, participated in Spokane’s Allied Arts organization, and served on the board of Artist Trust, a statewide arts advocacy program. Kodis also was a founding member, board member, chair and contributor to “Inland Craft Warnings,” an annual juried fine crafts exhibition and sale for 29 years.

‘Burnished Ground’ Exhibition Opens May 30

The exhibition “Burnished Ground: 400 Years of Mezzotints from the Collection” opens in the Jundt’s Arcade Gallery on Tuesday, May 30 and runs through Aug. 12. The exhibition features prints utilizing the rare mezzotint process spanning 400 years, and includes works by artists Robert Sargeant Austin, Carol Wax and Charl Chew.

The museum’s exhibitions and events are free and open to the public from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and are closed on Sundays and University holidays.
