CITY LINE REACHES 500,000 RIDES

Thursday, April 4, 2024

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Transit Authority’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route, City Line, reached a monumental milestone this week of 500,000 rides since its launch on July 15, 2023. It has quickly risen to the route with the highest ridership per mile of any route in the transit system.

“This milestone demonstrates the success of the new BRT service in connecting riders to and through downtown Spokane,” said E. Susan Meyer, CEO of Spokane Transit. “People want convenient, frequent service and connections to major routes and destinations. City Line ridership shows that the new, higher level of service accomplishes what it set out to do.”

City Line currently offers service every 7.5-minutes weekdays from 7-9 am and 3-6 pm, and 15-minute service most other times, including Saturdays and into the late night six nights a week (there is 30-minute service on Sundays). Next month on May 26 as part of the May service change, midday service will increase to every 10 minutes. Buses will run every 15 minutes on Sundays.

There are multiple ways riders can pay fare not only on City Line, but on all STA buses. In addition to cash, fare payment can be done with a Connect card, as well as Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Youth 18 and under ride free. STA also offers reduced fare for individuals aged 60 and older, individuals with disabilities, active duty military personnel and veterans, and students enrolled in educational or training programs, including vocational training, apprenticeships, and any other post-high school or educational courses.

The six-mile route between Spokane’s historic Browne’s Addition neighborhood and Spokane Community College connects through downtown and the University District, including Gonzaga University. The route features zero-emission buses and distinctly branded stations with enhanced rider amenities, such as near-level boarding, off-board ticketing, and monitors displaying real-time estimates of departure times. City Line also brought significant streetscape and road improvements along the route.
