Spokane River Forum Giving Thanks for Volunteers: 40,554 lbs. of trash and litter gobbled up in 2023

Thursday, November 16, 2023

In 2023, close to 2,000 volunteers removed over 40,000 lbs. of litter and trash from the Spokane River. Activities largely stretched from State Line to the City of Spokane treatment plant 29 miles downstream.

Since 2017, the Spokane River Forum and Spokane Riverkeeper have partnered to develop and grow the river cleanup program. The results speak for themselves, with poundage removed in 2023 being close to a 50% increase over 2022.

“People come out as individuals and families as well as part of corporate and non-profit community service,” said Forum Executive Director Andy Dunau. “We meet them where they’re at, offering options for public clean up days, scheduled and guided cleanups for groups, and do-it-yourself options.”

Check out our clean up page for the many public, private and foundation sponsors that provide us with the resources to make this a year-round community effort. From that page, you can also volunteer for 2024 cleanup.

For everyone’s efforts, we give thanks!!
