Economist Michael Shuman to present to SIMBA Oct 31

Tuesday, October 31, 2023

What is scarier than the blow-up Walmart witch in your neighbor's front yard? It's the haunted souls of real life ghost towns where local businesses couldn't access the capital they needed to survive that keeps us up at night!  Fortunately there are ways we can all invest through a local benefit lens to stabilize our Main Streets in the face of monster monopolies, rising costs, and increasingly impossible to qualify lending practices.

Join us on Tuesday, 10/31 at the Liberty Park Library to discuss:

  • What are simple strategies to first invest in ourselves so we can afford to invest in our neighbors?
  • What is a Local Investment Network, and what will it take to revive one in Spokane?
  • Hear local success stories of community capital making the difference for Spokane startups in the past.
  • Learn about Self-Directed IRAs and Solo 401(k)s
  • What is a Community Investment Fund, and what efforts are underway to potentially create one in our community?

A big thanks to our partners at the University District, the Spokane Public Library, Measure Meant and others for rallying to help make Michael's knowledge available to both businesses and local investment leaders in our community!

Can't join us on Halloween? Thanks to a contract we have with the Department of Commerce's Small Business Resiliency Network (SBRN) program, if you are a BIPOC, Immigrant or LGBTQIA2S+ entrepreneur or business owner, SIMBA can provide technical assistance (TA) to you free of charge. Comparable services are also available at no additional charge to SIMBA Members.  You can find more information about SIMBA's TA program here.
