James M. Record, MD, JD, has been named interim dean of Washington State University’s Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, effective July 5. He has served as the college’s vice dean for GME, CME and Partnerships since 2021 and is a clinical professor in the Department of Medical Education and Clinical Sciences.

During his time at WSU, Dr. Record has provided executive oversight of the offices of Graduate Medical Education, Continuing Medical Education, Land-Grant Mission and Leadership, Advancement, and Compliance for the college, which is based on the university’s Spokane campus. His role has included developing new clinical partnerships, residency programs, continuing medical education programs, and an alumni affairs program, as well as the college’s system-wide strategic planning.

“Dr. Record’s extensive leadership experience and demonstrated commitment to excellence in health education are invaluable to our WSU Health Sciences team,” said Daryll DeWald, vice president for WSU Health Sciences and chancellor for WSU Spokane. “I have every confidence in Dr. Record’s capacity to ensure the continued success of the College of Medicine and look forward to working with him as we build and enhance our relationships with partners and communities around Washington.”

Prior to WSU, Record has served as the dean of the Chicago Medical School as well as provost and chief academic officer at Ross University School of Medicine. He has held multiple prior positions of leadership in undergraduate and graduate medical education at the St. Joseph’s Healthcare System, New York Medical College, and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

“It is an honor to be a part of the extraordinary team at WSU and contribute to the land-grant mission that guides us in everything we do,” said Record. “I cannot emphasize enough what a privilege it has been to work with our founding dean, Dr. John Tomkowiak, and to support his vision of the college’s bright future and its impact on our communities in Washington State.”

Record earned a bachelor’s degree with high honors in biochemistry and sociology from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. He earned his MD from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and completed his residency training in general internal medicine at Brown University School of Medicine—Rhode Island Hospital. Additionally, he has received his JD from Rutgers University.

Record will take on a two-year appointment, concluding in July 2024.
