City of Spokane Ben Burr Trail Construction Continues

Friday, August 12, 2016

The Ben Burr Trail is part of an old rail road line that was built in 1904 and connected Spokane to destinations as far as Fairfield, Garfield, and Colfax. Today the trail spans one mile from Underhill Park to Liberty Park. The City of Spokane closed the trail in June to begin construction work.

Construction crews have been hard at work, paving the preexisting trail. Previously the trail was not accessible for people who were limited by a gravel surface; paving allows everyone to enjoy the Ben Burr Trail. Crews are currently working on landscaping and adding additional security lighting throughout the trail.

Work on the Ben Burr Trail extension which will connect Liberty Park to the Centennial Trail also continues. The connection will follow the west side of the Perry Street beneath the underpass of I90. There the Ben Burr Trail will cross 2nd Avenue and continue north along Erie Street, passing Sprague Avenue and the BNSF Railway with preexisting underpasses until the trail reaches Front Avenue.  The remaining trail will be along the south bank of the Spokane River, connecting with the University District campuses. Read more.
