SPOKANE, Wash.–Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine today announced it received provisional accreditation, the third of four major milestones to reach full accreditation.

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the accrediting agency for medical degree programs in the U.S. and Canada, granted the provisional accreditation after conducting an extensive site survey in February 2019 and evaluating the College of Medicine’s progress in meeting the standards.

“Achieving provisional accreditation is an important step in fulfilling our mission and commitment to the state of Washington, and paves the way for us to take the final step toward achieving full accreditation,” said John Tomkowiak, founding dean of the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. “This is an incredibly proud moment for WSU and for the College of Medicine, and I am so grateful to our faculty, staff, students and our community for dedicating countless hours to achieving this milestone among many others in our young history.”

Work will now begin to prepare for the final step in the accreditation process. The LCME will conduct another site visit in the 2020-2021 academic year, which will likely result in submission of more than 2,500 pages of documentation detailing the program and its compliance with all standards and requirements. Full accreditation is anticipated in 2021.
