Mark Robert Mansfield, PhD
Executive Director - (Outgoing)
Mark Robert Mansfield is the first full-time executive director for The University District, leading project development inside the district, guiding strategic direction and serving as liaison for the district to The City of Spokane and other federal, state and local government agencies, and facilitating board development for the University District Public Development Authority (UDPDA) and University District Development Association (UDDA).
A key role of the executive director is to realize the potential of the district as a platform of coordinated interests of higher education, research, and private sector development including the expanding healthcare, biomedical health science programs, and “smart city” communication technology investments in the area. Mansfield holds a PhD in Architecture, a Master’s degree from the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University with the Dimitris Pikionis Award for outstanding achievement; a MBA from the University of Washington; and a BA in Communications from the University of Puget Sound.
As an entrepreneur of a web-based retail business in the 1990s, Mansfield was an early adopter of e-commerce and social media trends. He has worked with development of historic properties and his own developments have received local, regional, and state recognition and awards – including top recognition from the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation. He has been a visiting scholar at Harvard University and taught at different Universities in Norway on architecture and business development. His interests concentrate on architecture as a facet of culture and the intersection of economic and architectural development.
Alden comes to the position as a highly-skilled executive assistant and administrator with extensive experience working alongside top academic, corporate, and non-profit leaders. Most recently Alden served as the administrator and assistant to the executive director of the Life Sciences Discovery Fund Authority (LSDF) a Washington state agency that supports innovative research across Washington to promote life science competitiveness, enhance economic vitality and improve health and health care. Alden's prior roles also include the executive assistant to the president emeritus of the University of Washington, to the founding director of the Talaris Research Institute and to the president of Pistol Creek Financial Company. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from the University of California Santa Barbara.
