SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga University School of Law will present the 2017 Red Mass for the Legal Profession at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 19 at the University Chapel in College Hall (502 E. Boone Ave). A reception will follow from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Globe Room at Cataldo Hall.

At the conclusion of the liturgy, Gonzaga Law School will present the 2017 Distinguished Legal Service Award to Howard H. Herman. A 1962 graduate of Gonzaga Law School, Herman has practiced law in Spokane since 1963. He has been recognized by many organizations for his volunteer service. He received the annual award from the Spokane County Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program for “Senior Attorney of the Year” and “Attorney of the Year” in 2002 and 2004, respectively. He is now of counsel with the firm Herman, Herman & Jolley in the Spokane Valley and his practice is limited to pro bono cases.

Originally held in 1310, Red Mass marked the beginning of the Michaelmas (fall term) of the King’s Bench during the reign of Edward of England. It was an occasion of pageantry and solemnity as judges, barristers and members of Parliament gathered to invoke God’s blessing and guidance for themselves and their profession.
