Drs. Swanson, Jones Named Assistant Deans for UWSOM-GU Regional Health Partnership

SPOKANE, Wash. – Two Eastern Washington physicians have been appointed as Assistant Deans by the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM) and will join the team of administrators and educators at the medical school presented by the UWSOM-Gonzaga University Regional Health Partnership. Internal Medicine physician, Judy Swanson, M.D., and Family Medicine physician, Geoff Jones, M.D., started in their new roles last month and will welcome 60 incoming and 60 returning Foundations Phase students this fall.
“These two highly respected clinicians and educators are very well positioned to lead our educational efforts in Spokane and Eastern Washington,” said Darryl Potyk, MD, Chief of Medical Education for the UWSOM-GU Regional Health Partnership. “Between them, doctors Swanson and Jones have over 30 years of combined teaching and leadership experience. We are thrilled that they both happen to be UWSOM graduates and trained in Spokane-based residency programs. Having them join us in this leadership capacity is a testament to the success and quality of our healthcare enterprise in Spokane.”
Dr. Swanson has practiced Internal Medicine in Spokane since 1995, and began teaching Internal Medicine clinical rotations in 2000. She was named Assistant Clinical Dean for Spokane, a position recently vacated by Potyk, who was named Chief of Medical Education and Associate Dean for Eastern Washington for UWSOM last spring.
Dr. Swanson graduated from the UW School of Medicine in 1984, and went on to do her Internal Medicine residency in Spokane. Twelve years later Dr. Swanson returned to the Internal Medicine Residency program as Attending Faculty, and in 2015 was appointed Clinical Professor with the University of Washington.
Dr. Jones has been teaching UWSOM students during their Family Medicine clinical rotations at the Newport Community Hospital in Newport, WA for the past 15 years. He was named Assistant Dean for Eastern Washington, a position recently vacated by John McCarthy, M.D., who was elevated to the position, Assistant Dean of Rural Programs, for UWSOM. He is a 1996 graduate of the UW School of Medicine, and subsequently did his Family Medicine residency in Spokane. He was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor with the University of Washington in 2013.
