Spokane Medical Student Named to the University of Washington’s 2017 Husky 100

April 7, 2017Mara Hazeltine, a Spokane native and second-year medical student with the UW School of Medicine (UWSOM) in Spokane, has been named to the prestigious 2017 Husky 100. The Husky 100 is an annual recognition of 100 outstanding University of Washington undergraduate and graduate students from all areas of study. Mara is one of three medical students included this year, and the only student attending classes on the Gonzaga University campus, through the UW School of Medicine-Gonzaga University Regional Health Partnership.

The 100 exceptional UW students were chosen for actively connecting what happens inside the classroom with what happens outside the classroom—blazing pathways between subject matter and their practical experience. They embrace innovation and tackle challenges with passion and creativity, and they are motivated and mindful leaders who work toward a more just and equitable world.

“We are so pleased that Mara received this impressive recognition from the UW—it is very well-deserved,” said William G. Sayres, Jr. M.D., Assistant Dean with the UW School of Medicine in Spokane. “Mara is extremely motivated by her passion for medicine, and compassion for the medically underserved. She is a strong leader who has influenced students and faculty alike through her dedication to community service, her advocacy work for diversity, her ethics, sense of fairness, and enthusiasm.”

Outside of her medical training, Mara is president of the UWSOM Medical Student Association, a student leadership and service organization that supports the medical student body. She is also co-creator of the Med for Ed program in Spokane—a successful community educational outreach program and service learning opportunity for medical students. Additionally, Mara is a Spokane County Medical Society (SCMS) board member, and serves on the SCMS Medical Education Task Force.

Last month Mara received the UW School of Medicine Shikany Inspirational Award, given to a medical student nominated by their peers and faculty for demonstrating outstanding character and inspiring classmates and faculty through leadership and academic achievement. Mara received the award at the UW-GU Regional Health Partnership’s Clinical Transition Ceremony, marking the end of classroom training and the beginning of clinical clerkship rotations.

“I am honored and humbled to be included among the Husky 100,” says Mara. “It has been a great experience being both a Husky and a Bulldog this year. The UW and GU have a shared mission to serve the greater good and that aligns with my desire to become a community-centered physician, and deliver care to the vulnerable neighborhoods that need our help most.”
