SPOKANE, Wash. – Washington State University is operating a new cable television channel dedicated to promoting its health sciences programs.

WSU Health Sciences TV went on the air Jan. 1. It occupies channel 16 on the Comcast cable system and is only visible to Comcast subscribers in Spokane, although many of the programs that air there are also available on the WSU Spokane YouTube channel.

The new cable channel features university-produced programs such as Health Sciences Update – interviews with WSU health sciences faculty – and important WSU Spokane events such as President Kirk Schulz’s first visit to the Spokane campus. It also includes material from outside sources, such as a series of food preparation programs from the Alaska Cooperative Extension Service.

“This is a new way for WSU to tell the story about its growing health sciences portfolio and to promote healthy living in general,” said WSU Spokane Chancellor Lisa Brown.

“Even though our TV channel is only available to viewers in Spokane right now, we eventually want to explore the possibilities of making our programs available to other television outlets around the state,” she said.

The channel is operated by program manager Doug Nadvornick and video producer Michael Bethely on the Spokane campus, with help from KSPS Public Television in Spokane and Northwest Public Television in Pullman.
