Meet the Presenters:

John Dickson, Chief Operations Officer, Spokane County

John is Spokane County’s Chief Operations Officer, a role that he began in March 2013. He’s leading significant operational improvement activities across Spokane County government to make it more ‘Lean’, effective and customer-focused. Since February 2014, over 500 improvement projects have been initiated and run by county staff that are resulting in significant annual savings/avoidances. Previously, John worked for the military side of Boeing for over 20 years and held senior leadership roles in the Sea Launch, B-2 bomber, and F-22 Raptor programs. He left Boeing in 2006 to become Berg Integrated System’s General Manager, a start-up company in Plummer, ID that fabricated large fuel bladders and expandable shelters for the US Army. His government career began in 2010 when he became WA State Employment Security Department’s Regional Area Director overseeing the WorkSource Spokane Employment Center. He has also been a Dale Carnegie leadership trainer since 2003 and was ranked as the #2 trainer in the world (over 3,000 trainers) in 2005.

Ev Hopkins, Chief Administrative Officer, STCU

Ev Hopkins, PHR, is the Chief Administrative Officer for STCU. In her current role, she serves STCU’s internal audit, marketing, facilities, training, human resource, special deposits and administration teams. In addition, she facilitates the credit union’s strategic planning process. Her passions include mentoring, leader development and organizational design. Ev received a Bachelor’s degree in Program Management from Whitworth College and a Masters of Organizational Leadership and Certificate in Servant Leadership from Gonzaga University.

Ruth Reynolds, Office Manager, Leadership Spokane

Ruth Reynolds serves Leadership Spokane as office manager, a position she has held since June 2015. She previously worked at The Spokesman-Review for 24 years, starting as a newsroom receptionist and departing in 2014 as a copy editor and page designer.

Ruth returned to school at Eastern Washington University in September 2015 to complete the bachelor’s degree she started 30 years earlier at Western Washington University. Attending classes part-time while working full time has been challenging, fulfilling, and interesting over the last year. She will graduate in June 2017 and plans to “walk” at graduation.

Ruth grew up on Spokane’s Northside, graduated from Gonzaga Prep and now lives in the Perry District with her husband and a tiny dog.

Beck A. Taylor, President, Whitworth University

Beck A. Taylor, Ph.D., became the 18th president of Whitworth University (Spokane, Wash.) in July 2010. He came to Whitworth after serving as dean and professor of economics for the Brock School of Business at Samford University (Birmingham, Ala.) and as associate dean for research and faculty development for the Hankamer School of Business at Baylor University (Waco, Tex.), where he was also the W.H. Smith Professor of Economics. In his first year as Whitworth’s president, Taylor led the development of Whitworth’s 10-year vision and strategic plan, Whitworth 2021: Courage at the Crossroads, which details plans to continue to elevate Whitworth among the leading Christian universities in the country. Taylor’s first six years at Whitworth have been highlighted by a renewed emphasis on community involvement; efforts to enhance academic quality, including the creation of the College of Arts and Sciences and a new honors program; the building of new campus infrastructure to facilitate the university’s academic and student life programs; the creation of newly endowed faculty positions and centers; spearheading Whitworth’s largest-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign; and an emphasis on overall institutional effectiveness.
