Community Colleges of Spokane Chancellor Christine Johnson selected Steve Chen to serve as the chief information officer for the community college district.

“I believe Dr. Chen’s skills and talents will assist CCS not just with our immediate needs, but also in prioritizing our vision for a strategic long-term technology plan,” Johnson said. “He brings a wealth of information technology experience and a strong understanding of emerging technologies.”

Chen has 21 years of experience in the field with leadership roles in advancing e-learning, managing enterprise applications and supporting university research activities with emerging technology. He was the first CIO at the University of Texas at Brownsville and more recently served as the CIO at Hudson Valley Community College in the State University of New York (SUNY), as well as at the Utica College of Syracuse University and the City College at the City University of New York.

He earned both his master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his bachelor’s degree from Fujian Teachers University in Fuzhou, China.
The CIO serves on the senior management team for community colleges.

“I look forward to joining this vibrant and dynamic learning community under the leadership of Dr. Johnson,” Chen said. “Together we will develop an information technology strategic plan for the district and will pursue top priorities in the areas of ctcLink stabilization, infrastructure, instructional technologies, online learning, customer services and information security.”

Chen will begin on January 30.
